The Pleasure Principle

Pleasure disorders are diseases of the body's natural pleasure pathways. Although intoxicating substances produce addictive disorders, many times repetitive behaviors are used for their intoxicating properties as well. These behavioral or process addictions mimic the addictive cycle and neuro-chemical responses of intoxicating substances without ingesting chemicals.
Addictive behaviors rely on anticipatory, excitatory rapid release of neuro-chemicals and tolerance that are the hallmarks of all addictive disorders. This program will focus specifically on sexual, gambling and food addictions. Special attention will be given to potential co morbidity of substance and process addiction.
